│ │
│ - You always have to start with the fingers of the left hand on the keys │
│ A-S-D-F and the right fingers on J-K-L etc. Consult the menu option │
│ FINGER POSITIONS for information about which finger should be on which │
│ key. Feel the slight projections on the keys <F> and <J>. Your thumbs │
│ should rest on the <Spacebar>: keep a little distance between the │
│ thumbnails. Turn your wrists slightly inwards. The forefingers should be │
│ parallel to each other. Keep the tops of the fingers perpendicular on the │
│ keys. │
│ │
│ - Each touch should be short and firm. The fingers should stay in the same │
│ place as far as possible after each strike. Be sure to use the correct │
│ finger on the key. If you want to learn to touch type you have to use all │
│ ten fingers. Capitals have to be typed with the correct fingers while │
│ pressing the shift key with the little finger of the other hand. │
│ │
│ - Type regularly (staccato) and slowly at first. This will eventually help │
│ you to gain more speed. You must type the letters appearing on the screen │
│ gently. Do not pay any attention to how often they appear: Just type the │
│ letters. Do keep looking at the screen. Don't look at the keyboard. │

│ │
│ - Touching a shift key also counts for a touch. In connection with this way │
│ of counting the <Caps-Lock> key is automatically switched off by the │
│ program. The <Num-Lock> key has been automatically switched on to assist │
│ exercising on the numerical keyboard. This may be troublesome when using a │
│ portable. Some computers may even stop working. These problems can be │
│ solved by adding the parameters C and N to the command TYPEMATE when │
│ starting the program. This will prevent Typemate from switching off and │
│ switching on these keys. Start Typemate in the following way: │
│ C:\> TYPEMATE CN and press <Enter>. │
│ Other parameters you can use: O (Sound OFF) and Q A or Z (Keyboards). E.G.:│
│ C:\> TYPEMATE OZ CN and press <Enter>. │
│ │
│ - In most European countries typing speed is measured in "keystrokes per │
│ minute". As mentioned above the touch of a shift key counts for a │
│ keystroke. In the USA and the UK typing speed is often measured in "words │
│ per minute": only visible characters are counted (so shift keys and spaces │
│ are NOT). The total of visible characters is divided by five in order to │
│ obtain the (fictitious!) number of words typed. │

┌──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ │
│ - Typemate teaches you the ten-finger system in which the ring finger of the │
│ left hand touches the letter <Z>. Alongside this system there is another │
│ common finger positioning in which you strike this letter with the little │
│ finger of the left hand. In the latter case your fingers are all moved one │
│ to the right on the bottom rown of keys. You may choose which system to │
│ adopt. Typemate will however always indicate the finger position according │
│ to the first system mentioned above. │
│ │
│ - Typemate is available in Dutch and English and French translations. We are │
│ working at the German and Spanish versions --> release at the end of 1993. │

│ The accent generator helps you by making characters with accents. │
│ │
│ Examples: │
│ The characters ' and e give é │
│ The characters ' and k give 'k │
│ The characters ' and a space give only a ' │
│ │
│ Scheme: │
│ ╔═══════╤═════════════════════════════╗ │
│ ║ Char. │ a A e E i o O u U y c C n N ║ │
│ ╟───────┼─────────────────────────────╢ │
│ ║ " │ ä Ä ë ï ö Ö ü Ü ÿ ║ │
│ ║ ' │ á é É í ó ú ç Ç ║ │
│ ║ ` │ à è ì ò ù ║ │
│ ║ ^ │ â ê î ô û ║ │
│ ║ ~ │ å Å ñ Ñ ║ │
│ ╚═══════╧═════════════════════════════╝ │
│ │
│ Characters with accents can be produced in this way in all MS-Windows │
│ applications. Therefore one has to choose the keyboard VS-INTERNATIONAL │
│ (from the Setup in Windows). │
